U.S. citizens will need a visa to travel to Europe beginning in 2021

United States citizens will be required to have a visa if they travel to Europe, beginning from 2021, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) announced on Sunday.

“The visa will be valid for three years, and will allow a holder to enter the country “as many times as necessary,’’ ETIAS added.

Currently, U.S. citizens may travel to Europe for up to 90 days without a visa.

“Like many other countries, the decision to require a visa comes in an effort to improve security and avoid any further problems with illegal immigration and terrorism.

“The requirement includes the European Schengen-zone, a group of 26 countries, 22 of which are members of the European Union,’’ it said.4

When enrolling in ETIAS, a person’s passport must be valid for three months after the intended stay.

Passports over 10 years old may not be accepted as valid forms of documentation for travel.

Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland are just a few of the countries affected by the new mandate.

ETIAS is a border control system created by the European Commission, which works to secure borders around the EU.

report says a full list of countries that will require a visa from U.S. citizens is available on the ETIAS website. (dpa/NAN)

Nigeria election: Abia gets new Police Commissioner

Less than 24 hours after the commissioner of police in Abia state, Etim Okon joined the DIG Anthony Ogbizi to speak on strategies and level of preparedness of the state command for the governorship and House of Assembly elections scheduled for this Saturday, a fresh CP, Awosola Awotinde has been sent to take over from him.

Awotinde, upon arrival, met with heads of all the sister security agencies at the police headquarters in Umuahia to familiarise with them as the new CP.

He also called on the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr. Joseph Iloh, to acquaint him on developments and possibly give him assurances of the police commitment to work.

In an interview with newsmen on Friday, CP Awotinde stated that he has no problems getting the job done as a professional irrespective of location.

He also solicited the cooperation of sister agencies in the discharge of their duties for Saturday’s elections.

Etim Okon has been moved to Ebonyi state where Awotinde came from to replace him.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, has called on Abians to strongly consider political platform and personal character while voting on Saturday.

Chief Okiyi Kalu, who made the call in Umuahia while speaking to newsmen, stated that it is difficult to divorce leaders from their personal character and political platform while in office.

According to him, “A politician might claim that he will not implement grazing colony as Governor but same politician will be helpless if his political party supports the setting up of grazing colonies.

“Voters are therefore advised to consider the tendencies of the political platform of contestants to office as well as their personal character while choosing who will govern them.

“An arrogant man is a dangerous proposition that voters should distance themselves from as the individual will ultimately mistreat common folks or lead them with the mentality of a “Mr Know All” even while operating within our democratic space.”

He called on INEC to ensure that all observed lapses in the recent Presidential and National Assembly Elections were corrected, and urged security agents to ensure that they are not used as tools by unscrupulous politicians to thwart the will of the people of the state.

“We have received reports of plans to use security agents to intimidate Abia voters, compel INEC officials to announce wrong results and provide cover for hoodlums to unleash electoral mayhem on the people of the state, and have reported to appropriate authorities. Rogue security agents must know that they are answerable for their actions and will bear full responsibility for any breakdown of law and order in any part of the state.

“Our party, PDP, is ready for free and fair elections and have confidence in the determination of the people of the state to re-elect high performing Governor Okezie Ikpeazu by landslide margins. All we are asking is for the election to be free, fair and peaceful,” Kalu said.

Going along with the state level elections will be supplementary elections supplementary National Assembly elections in 14 states of the federation. That is besides the Federal Capital Territory, FCT elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this Thursday in Abuja at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Security ICCES held in Abuja also pledged the commission’s readiness to partner with security agencies for the prosecution of electoral offenders.

“On Saturday 9th March 2019, Nigerians are once again going to the polls to elect Governors in 29 States, 991 members of Houses of Assembly in all the States of the Federation, 6 Chairmen as well as 62 Councillors for the Area Councils in the FCT. A total of 1,082 candidates will be elected by citizens across the country.

“Learning from the experience of the presidential and National Assembly elections held two weeks ago, the commission has effectively tackled the challenge of logistics.

“Materials for the election have been delivered to all States and the FCT. Movement to the Local Government Areas will be completed today. By tomorrow, all materials and relevant personnel will arrive at the Registration Area Centres RACs. With this arrangement, we are confident that all polling units will open at 8.00 am nationwide.

“In addition to elections into 1,082 constituencies nationwide, the Commission will conduct supplementary elections in 14 States of the Federation covering 7 Senatorial Districts and 24 federal constituencies. elections in the affected areas were disrupted mainly by acts of violence involving ballot box snatching, abduction of INEC officials, over voting and the failure to adhere to regulations and guidelines.

He said, for Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies in which winners have already emerged, the Commission will issue their Certificates of Return next week.

“Preparations for the elections holding this weekend into 1,082 constituencies require the full attention of the entire Commission. We reckoned that the elected candidates are also busy campaigning in their constituencies for the remaining elections”, he said.

Accordingly, Certificates of Return shall be presented at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Thursday March 14 for Senators Elect and later same day for Members of the House of Representatives-elect.

“Certificates of Return for Governors and Deputy-Governors-elect, Members of State Houses of Assembly-elect and Chairmen and Councillors for the FCT shall be presented in each State of the Federation by the Supervising National Commissioners and the Resident Electoral Commissioners RECs on a date to be announced next week.

On behalf of the Commission, I extend our deepest condolence to the families of those who lost their lives, including personnel of the security agencies. We are glad that the Police has made several arrests and investigation is ongoing. I wish to assure Nigerians that the Commission will work closely with the Police to ensure the diligent prosecution of all violators of our electoral laws. Citizens are asking for effective but non-intrusive protection before, during and immediately after the elections in which their rights are respected and their choices safeguarded.

“The Commission is concerned that many of our materials, including ballot boxes, voting cubicles, voters’ registers and Smart Card Readers were lost to acts of hooliganism and thuggery in the elections held two weeks ago. Most worrisome is the attack on electoral officials. Some of our staff were abducted and taken hostage in an attempt to disrupt elections or influence the outcome. In fact, some of the supplementary elections I referred to earlier were caused by such acts of thuggery.

Under our Regulations and Guidelines, there are clear penalties for the deliberate failure to deploy them on the part of our staff. Where such happens with the connivance of communities, the result of election in the polling unit(s) will be cancelled and zero vote recorded.

Real Madrid Loses Another Star To Juventus As Marcelo Is Set To Reunite With Ronaldo

Juventus appear to have poached yet another Real Madrid superstar after reportedly agreeing a four-year deal with Marcelo.

La Stampa claims the Brazilian will pocket a staggering £10million-a-season in Turin, making him one of the club’s top earners.

Juventus stunned world football when they completed a shock move for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

And it’s reckoned that Marcelo has been pining for a reunion with his good friend after 13 years at the Bernabeu.

He is said to have been in exit talks with Real chiefs for some time.

And the situation has been exacerbated after Marcelo was reportedly dropped by Santiago Solari for being a stone overweight in January.

It’s reckoned the 30-year-old could fetch as much as £40million, with Juve likely to sell Manchester United target Alex Sandro as a result.

But whether Marcelo brings success to Juventus remains to be seen, with Ronaldo’s arrival yet to improve their fortunes in the Champions League.

Max Allegri is set for the chop after losing the first leg of his last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid 2-0.

Both PDP and APC Don’t Deserve Our Votes – Prof. Wole Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka, says the two leading political parties – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party – do not deserve to return to power.

Speaking on Thursday, however, he said, “It is time for a totally new direction, and when an alternative emerges, we will give the candidate our backing,” he said.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me make my position quite clear because I don’t want any ambiguity; I, Wole Soyinka, will not be voting for either the two so-called contesting parties. I find both of them worthy of absolute rejection.

“For a number of reasons which I will not go into here, I’m not interested in a comparative assessment. My position is simply that it is time for a totally new direction. And obviously, I’m not the only one, as I’m speaking, there is a coalition having its meeting in Lagos from which they hope to produce a consensus candidate.

“There is another group meeting in Abuja, also at the end would send us their consensus candidate. Things have been going on quietly in the background to try and change the direction of this nation in a very positive way and to make the public understand that they do not have to be enslaved permanently to the old discredited order. It is my sole business in this election.

“I don’t believe in what is called negative vote which means, for me, throwing your vote in a wastebasket, I believe instead in a creative vote, not a protest vote, not a negative vote but a creative vote.

“And a creative vote means that the will to at least sow a seed through your vote that will germinate eventually. The pace of germination is beyond the control of everyone, but it is never too early to make a beginning. It has happened before in other societies. When a dark horse emerges from nowhere and trumps all the political juggernauts caterpillars and so on with their performers, worthless, their capacity for violence and treachery.”

He added that the reason they are yet to arrive at a consensus candidate was because the supposed genuine third force was hijacked.

UEFA explain controversial Champions League VAR calls

Referee Damir Skomina checks the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second-leg football match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester United at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris on March 6, 2019. Martin BUREAU / AFP

UEFA took the unusual step on Friday to explain a series of controversial Video Assistant Referees (VAR) calls in this week’s Champions League last 16 ties.

European football’s governing body bowed to pressure by bringing forward the introduction of VAR into the Champions League for the knockout rounds, having not used the technology for the group stages.

Ajax and Manchester United benefited from disputed decisions in sealing dramatic comebacks to eliminate holders Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

The handball given against PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe to award United a stoppage time penalty, which Marcus Rashford converted to complete a 3-1 win on the night at the Parc des Princes and progress on away goals, was branded “a disgrace” by injured PSG star Neymar.

Even former United players Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen said in their roles at TV pundits the penalty should not have been awarded.

However, UEFA explained why Slovenian referee Damir Skomina reversed his original decision not to point to the spot having been alerted to watch a replay of the incident by the VAR.

“Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected,” said UEFA’s statement.

“The defender’s arm was not close to the body, which made the defender’s body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick.”

Ajax’s third goal in a 4-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu was reviewed over whether the ball had gone out for what would have been a Madrid throw-in prior to Dusan Tadic’s finish.

UEFA said referee Felix Brych was right to award the goal in the absence of conclusive proof the ball crossed the touchline.

Porto’s comeback from a 2-1 first leg defeat to beat Roma 3-1 after extra-time was also marked by big VAR calls.

The Portuguese side’s winner came from a penalty awarded by VAR three minutes from time.

Roma then had a penalty claim of their own turned down when Patrik Schick tumbled inside the area.

“Last year we asked for VAR in the Champions League because we got screwed in the semi-final and tonight, they’ve got VAR and we still get robbed,” raged Roma president James Pallotta.

However, UEFA insisted on the Schick incident “no clear and obvious error had occurred and that there was no ground for a VAR intervention and an on-field review.”

March 9 election: Enugu APC calls for postponement

Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Enugu State chapter, Thursday, took a protest to the Enugu office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, demanding postponement of the governorship and House of Assembly elections in the State.

The party members were led by the State Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye.

DAILY POST reports that this came as an Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal earlier in the day reinstated Senator Ayogu Eze as the party’s governorship candidate.

An Abuja Federal High Court had sacked Ayogu and ordered the INEC to recognize Barr. George Ogara. However, in a judgement today, the Appellate Court said Senator Eze remained the party’s candidate.

Following the development, the party members demanded a postponement of the exercise to enable them carry out campaign across the State.

“We have written the INEC; we are demanding that they should postpone the exercise. They should push it forward to enable us carry out our campaign,” Nwoye said.

Earlier Senator Eze had boasted that with the Court verdict, the coast was clear for him.

He said nobody would be able to stop his political movement, which he described as a tornado.

“I want to assure you that our spirit is not down. This tornado is on the move,” he stated.

Buhari Meets With Labour, Gives Assurance On N30,000 Minimum Wage

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that his government will meet their N30, 000 minimum wage demand.

The President gave the assurance when the NLC leadership visited him at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Buhari questioned what the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did with the oil money when they were in power, reminding the NLC that he had intervened when they made their demand for 30,000 Naira as minimum wage, at a time when the nation was barely struggling to survive.

He also noted that the rail system was left undone and the power sector was left unfixed despite the 16billion naira earmarked for these projects.

The President described that expenditure made by the previous government as unprecedented and irresponsible.

He said the present administration was saddled with dealing with the ‘terrible mismanagement of the country’.

He acknowledged the pressure the union had faced in calling for an increase in the minimum wage and thanked them for the support they gave him during the elections.

On their own part, the NLC leaders congratulated President Buhari on his election victory.

Drama As Pastor Fails To Resurrect Man After Jumping Inside Grave

A pastor has embarrassed himself after attempting to resurrect a dead person but failed woefully. The incident is reported to have happened in South or Eastern Africa.

In a viral video online, the cleric, spotting a dark Jacket and brown trousers is seen screaming and shouting a ‘word of prayer’ on the coffin before proceeding to open it, exposing the corpse.

The pastor proceeded to lay on the corpse, screaming at it to ‘Rise up’, a call that was unfortunately not heeded to. He proceeded to walk around the corpse muttering some incoherent words before asking to be helped out of the grave.

This development is coming a few weeks after a South-African pastor, Alph Lukau raised eyebrows with a ‘miraculous’ resurrection of a dead man named ‘Elliot’.

Lukau made headlines after the miracle was disproved as ‘Fake’ as video footage from the scene reveal that the ‘Elliot’ was indeed alive by the time the coffin was opened.

Lukau faced severe criticisms online with many calling for his arrest and prosecution.  As at the time of filing this report, It’s unclear if the South-African government will press charges against the popular pastor.

Breaking: Why I want INEC to surrender election materials for inspection – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party,  PDP,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, adduced reasons why he applied for an order to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  to surrender all the materials used for the February 23 presidential election, for inspection.

He said the request was to establish that the exercise was fraught with manifest irregularities, including multiple thumb-printing of ballot papers, saying he intends to engage forensic experts to analyse the election materials.

Consequently, he prayed the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, for leave to be allowed to obtain some of the sensitive materials that INEC deployed for the presidential election.

Meantime, the tribunal, stood-down its proceedings for one hour to enable it to consider the merit or otherwise of the request.

The three-man panel tribunal headed by Justice Abdul Aboki, reserved ruling on the motion marked CA/A/P/EPT/1/2019 after it heard from Atiku’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, SAN.

Uche told the tribunal that the motion dated March 4, was brought pursuant to section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution,  as amended and section 151 of the Electoral Act, sought for six reliefs, among which included an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to surrender all the sensitive materials that were used for the presidential poll, for forensic scrutiny.

Among items, he said his client wants to be inspected by forensic experts, include over 80million ballot papers that were used for the election, which he said would be subjected to thumbprint analysis.

Other items the motion is asking the electoral body to release to the intending petitioners for scrutiny are the Voters Register, the Smart Card Reader Machines, as well as information stored in INEC’s back-up server.

He said the first prayer in the motion paper was for leave of the tribunal permitting Atiku and the Peoples Democratic Party,  PDP, to file the action before the pre-hearing session of the tribunal, as prescribed by the Electoral Act.

The Applicants (Atiku and PDP) urged the tribunal to direct INEC to allow their agents to scan and make photocopies of vital documents used in the conduct of the election, for the purpose of establishing manifest irregularities they said led to President Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence as the winner of the presidential election.

They maintained that the six reliefs sought against INEC were for the purpose of filing and maintaining an election petition they intend to lodge against the outcome of the 2019 Presidential Election.

Chief Uche, SAN, said his clients decided to approach the tribunal with the motion, in view of the fact that the Electoral Act stipulated that filing of the petition must not exceed 21 days after the election result was announced.

“Because of the limited time,  the Applicants who intend to file a petition, want to go and inspect, to be able to secure some of the documents that will be relied upon to maintain the petition.

“We are urging your Lordships to grant us this orders so that if we are inspecting, we can make copies by way of scanning or photocopying.

“The entire process will be conducted in the presence of INEC officials, and even the Respondents if they so wish”, Uche submitted.

However, the tribunal Chairman Justice Aboki queried Uche on why his clients would not simply apply to be issued with Certified True Copies of the requested items, and if the extant electoral law permits a litigant to scan election materials.

The tribunal panel stressed that opinion of forensic experts may not be admissible in evidence under the existing Electoral Act which it said specifically okayed the admittance of certified documents.

A member of the panel, Justice Emmanuel Agim, noted that some of the requests by Atiku and the PDP were “outside the precincts of section 151 of the Electoral Act”.

However, in his reply, Uche argued that the court had in a plethora of decided cases, held that the sort of evidence his clients are seeking to secure, could be admitted if it were obtained with the leave of court.

He said it would be practically impossible for INEC to certify over 80million ballot papers that were used in over 172, 000 polling units in the country where the presidential election took place.

According to Uche, with leave of the tribunal, forensic experts would be brought to testify and give evidence during the eventual hearing of the petition.

“My lords if they are not allowed to secure the evidence and testify, it will deprive us of the ability to identify those abnormalities when we find them.

“Besides, if one individual thumb-printed over 500 ballot papers, the certified copies cannot reveal it. That is why we want to scan them and send for expert analysis.

“That is why we need INEC to allow us access to scan the required documents. Going by section 72 of the Electoral Act,  all the materials are in the custody of INEC.

“The information we want to go is just to help us to package our complaint, at the end of the day,  INEC will also have the opportunity to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of any of the items we tender in evidence before the tribunal.

“In essence my lord no one will be prejudiced if our requests are granted.

“We make this application, knowing the very limited time and very disadvantaged position of any petitioner so far as gaining access to the election infrastructure is concerned”, Uche added.

After it had listened to the motion, the panel stood-down for one hour to deliver its ruling, even as directed Atiku’s counsel to supply it with the said court decisions that allowed the grant the reliefs sought by the Applicants.

The motion ex-parte motion was supported with a 12 paragraphed affidavit that was deposed to by one Col. Austin Akobundu, rtd, the director of Contact and Mobilization of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Council.

Cited as 1st to 3rd Respondents in the matter are the INEC, President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Army Vows Tough Action Against Perpetrators Of Electoral Violence

Ahead of the March 9, 2019 Governorship and House of Assembly elections, the Nigerian Army says it will deal decisively with persons planning to perpetrate any form of violence during the polls.

Addressing senior officers of the Army in Abuja, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieut. Gen. Tukur Buratai said the army would enforce all guidelines in support of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections in line with its constitutional roles.

The Army chief said, “We shall be tough on those who plan to rig or disrupt the electoral process.

“I, therefore, want to appeal to Nigerian youths to shun any attempt by any politician to use them to perpetrate any form of violence.”

According to him, “Recent security threat assessment and analysis of the coming elections show that politicians have made plans to use all means available to truncate the peaceful conduct of the elections.”

He said part of the plan to disrupt the elections involves the use of the farmers/herders crisis, armed political thugs and ethnic militia to perpetrate acts of violence, including bombings.

“Some of them also intend to infiltrate domestic staff of political opponents, employ mercenaries to carry out acts of assassinations, use of the social media for the smear campaign, hate speeches and spread fake news,” said Lieut. Gen. Buratai.

Against the backdrop of the killing of the young officer and soldiers during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Chief of Army Staff gave the assurance that those desperate politicians and criminals that attacked the troops would be tracked down and brought to justice.

Lagos: Who Owns The Land?

For as long as anyone could remember, Lagos has been called the real Naija. Lasgidi as its millennials fondly named it is the only state that accepts all comers. Its rich history of multiculturalism is an enviable badge of honour for its residents and the envy of other states and towns.

It’s first executive governor, Lateef Kayode Jakande is a Muslim whose forebears hailed from Omu-Aran in present day Kwara State. After winning the elections under the UPN flag in 1979, Jakande ran what some have described as unparalleled government and people-impacting governance to date. His ancestral root was not a subject of electioneering.

A Lagos socialite adopted Bola Ahmed Tinubu the second civilian governor of Lagos State, but his ‘roots’ are in Iragbiji in present-day Osun State. As governor, Tinubu assembled the best hands he could lay his hands on. Tunji Bello one of his commissioners is my kinsman from Kogi State. James Faleke, another cousin and freshly minted representative of the ruling APC for Ikeja Federal Constituency has his roots in Kogi State. In 2015, Faleke contested elections into Kogi government house. Lagos has mostly politicked to the left of the political spectrum – from UPN to AD and now APC. Joe Igbokwe, an Igbo has lived in Lagos basically all his life, and held political and appointive positions.

Ethnic politics, the bane of many states that began pre-2015 could only destroy the cosmopolitan ethos of a vibrant city. You could describe Lagos as that state where white people could balance with tuwo, where a Lebanese could teach a Yorubaman to do justice to abacha and ugba, while the Hausaman could tutor the Chinese to devour amala and gbegiri, because Lagos is the human melting pot.

It diminishes Nigeria to hear arguments for and against Lagos as a – No Man’s Land. Of course there is no such thing even in Kano where such a quarter is so named. The ancestral owners of an area know themselves. The earth is the Lord’s as land belongs to those who live on it, admitted they don’t ‘own’ it.

The layman’s understanding of the Land Use Act gives ownership to the Omo Onile – those whose ancestors have lived somewhere. Only where a land is appropriated for government use are ownership divested. Even at that, those with ancestral claims to the lands are adequately compensated along with those with tangible and intangible stakes in it. There are no indications that the Igbo or any other resident of Lagos arrogate to themselves the rights to sell the lands on which they live but do not own. Even where people have acquired stakes in a piece of land with certificates of occupancy to prove, lease on lands expire in 100 years, subject to renewal or refusal. So, why are we in this destructive campaign that seems to pitch one ethnic nationality against the other?

In 2019, old-time neighbours, schoolmates and even in-laws are up in arms against each other for political gains. Politics is a recurrent game that is equally ephemeral. We have a federation, albeit a contrived one. It provides that citizens are free to go and live, work and thrive anywhere they please. That provision has not changed. The average human just wants to live, work and thrive wherever fate takes them.

Naija citizens born and bred in our shores have found residency everywhere in the world. Seven members of the current British parliament are Nigerians by descent, elected to serve in their own country irrespective of their ancestral links. In Canada and America, citizens of Nigerian descent are elected into municipal and other levels of government making laws for the order and good government of their adopted homes without losing their ancestral roots. Hordes of us are waiting for adoption as citizens of other nations that have never heard of our parental ancestry. Others constantly knock on the door of embassies in the hope of finding greener pastures while a few are so brilliant other nations are begging to naturalize them for their talents.

It is extremely shameful that at a time when the black race face racism and discrimination forcing them to look to Africa as their ancestral home, those living in the continent are fighting ethno-nationalistic wars. When was any party founded on ethnic lines?

It is shameful that those who condemn xenophobic attacks in South Africa are at the base of this Lagos-Is-Not-A-No-Man’s-Land debacle. It is disturbing that those who are quick to condemn the resurgence of extreme right radicalisation in Europe and the Americas; whose siblings hold dual citizenship of other nations join in fueling the embers of ethnic cant. It is disheartening that the ori ade, or crown heads who should embrace all humans are at the fulcrum of this debasement. It is shameful that those who ought to condemn this nonsense are either complicitly silent, or stoking it.

Lagos is big enough to accommodate its inhabitants, and people are free to vote as they please. There is no evidence that any ethnic nationality engage in block votes. The inalienable right of people to vote as their conscience dictates is not just a democratic right, it is a right guaranteed under international law everywhere. This nonsense should stop already.

Pastor And His Secretary Kidnapped During Vigil In Plateau State

According to a report by Punch Metro, some unidentified gunmen have kidnapped a pastor with the ERCC church in Quaapan Local Government Area of Plateau State, identified as Rev. Thomas Ashaku.

It was gathered on Tuesday that the pastor and the church Secretary, Mr. Ezekiel Agwadu were kidnapped during a vigil organised by the church located at Namu community of the Council Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Tyopev Teena, did not pick his phone calls when contacted over the matter but the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Quaapan Council Area, Rev Isaac Tali, confirmed the kidnap of the two clerics to our correspondent in Jos on Tuesday.

We have made no plans to stop Atiku from going to court – APC debunks allegations

Festus Keyamo, SAN, who was the Director of Strategic Communications, APC Presidential Campaign Council has dismissed claims that the party is using every means possible to ‘prevail on Atiku Abubakar not to proceed to court’.

The official spokesperson of the APC campaign organization dissociates the APC from a letter written by the Buhari Campaign Organization, saying the BCO “does not represent the APC or the Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation in any way. ”

See full statement below

Our attention has been drawn to some news item and posts on social media reporting that we wrote a letter to some international bodies to prevail on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar not to proceed to court to challenge the result of the 2019 Presidential Election.

Our investigation reveals that a letter to that effect was purportedly written by a certain ‘Buhari Campaign Organisation’. This is the second time we will be informing the public that the said ‘Buhari Campaign Organisation’ does not act at the behest of the APC Presidential Campaign Council nor does it represent the Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation in any way. As a result, whatever it has released DOES NOT REPRESENT THE POSITION OF THE APC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL OR PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI.

Our official position is that we believe that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has a constitutional right to seek redress in court and we do not seek in any way to curtail that right. In fact, it is the resort to court that is the only democratic way to ventilate his perceived grievance and any attempt to restrict or discourage the exercise of such right would be an invitation to anarchy.

In addition, we are very anxious to meet Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in court in order to show the world in a conclusive manner the free and fair nature of the comprehensive defeat of Atiku at the polls. An election is not termed ‘rigged’ only by the mere claim of it by the loser. That is what Atiku and the PDP want to ram down our throats. Unfortunately for them, international, continental and sub-regional observers (who can be seen as neutral by all standards) ALL declared it to be free, fair and credible. No ego-massaging narrative can change that.

We therefore totally disassociate ourselves from the letter purportedly written by one of, perhaps, many support groups of President Muhammadu Buhari. They may have a right to their opinion, but it does not represent our official position.

Thank you.

Breaking: Presidential Commtt orders APC to lift suspension on Okorocha within 48hrs

Following the suspension given to the Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha by the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Working Committee last week, the Presidential Support Committee, PSC, South East Zone, has given the APC committee 48 hours ultimatum to lift the suspension.

According to the Presidential Committee, the suspension on Governor Okorocha came to it as a rude shock.

At a press briefing in Owerri on Tuesday, the presidential committee condemned the suspension of Okorocha, saying the act was done by a cabal.

It also wondered why the party would suspend what it described as one the ‘major financier of the party.”

The presidential committee said the suspension was a ploy to disorganise Ndigbo ahead of the 2023 presidential election believed to be the turn of the zone to produce a president.

The Presidential committee were led by the Director of Inter-Party Affairs, South East; Robert Ngwu, National Legal Adviser; Ejikeme Ugwu and Director, Political Matters; Comrade Maxwel Okoye.

Recall that the APC NWC had suspended Governor Okorocha over alleged anti-party activities.

But the Presidential Committee threatened legal actions on the APC if the suspension is not lifted.

According to the presidential committee: “Okorocha’s suspension came to us as a rude shock. There is no way a cabal can suspend a major financier of the party. We give the NWC and the national chairman 48 hours to reverse the suspension without delay else, we will resort to legal and mass action against the leadership of APC.

“The suspension is aimed at disorganising Igbo ahead of 2023. Oshiomhole cannot wake up and suspend a major financier of the party. We plead with Buhari not to allow some few individuals to rubbish his friends because we know that Okorocha is a good friend of the president.”

Breaking: Atiku, PDP file motion compelling INEC to surrender election materials for inspection

ABUJA—-The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have filed a motion to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to surrender all the materials that were used for the February 23 presidential election, for inspection.

The motion ex-parte was lodged before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal on Tuesday.

The Tribunal will conduct its proceedings at the Court of Appeal Headquarters in Abuja.

In the motion ex-parte dated March 4, Atiku and the PDP, applied for leave of the tribunal to allow them to inspect the Voters Register, the Smart Card Reader Machines, Ballot Papers and other vital documents that were used in the conduct of the presidential election.

They equally prayed the tribunal to compel the electoral body to allow their agents to scan and make photocopies of vital documents used in the conduct of the election, for the purpose of establishing alleged irregularities.

The Applicants, through their lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, told the tribunal that the reliefs sought against INEC was for the purpose of filing and maintaining an election petition they intend to lodge against the outcome of the 2019 Presidential Election.

The motion ex-parte motion was supported with a 12 paragraphed affidavit that was deposed to by one Col. Austin Akobundu, rtd, the director of Contact and Mobilization of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Council.

Meantime, no date has yet been fixed for hearing of the motion which has INEC, President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC, as 1st to 3rd Respondents.

Atiku who came second behind President Buhari of the APC, had earlier vowed to challenge the outcome of the presidential election in court, alleging that it was fraught with manifest irregularities.

He maintained that results collated by agents at various polling units across the federation, was at variance with what was eventually declared by INEC, in favour of President Buhari.

March 9 election: INEC retrains ad-hoc staff to address electoral hitches

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Plateau State has commenced a refresher training for its ad-hoc officials to mitigate against hitches experienced during the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Plateau, Mr. Osaretin Imahiyereobo, made this disclosure on Tuesday in Jos at a town hall meeting on Voter Education, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The meeting was organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with a private radio station to review the lessons learnt during the national elections and proffer solutions.

Imahiyereobo said the training was for confidence building for the staff as well as to acquire more requisite skills ahead of the March 9 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

“We received reports that many ad-hoc officials were intimidated at polling units to use manual polling which is zero voting.

“We want them to have the boldness and courage to coordinate the activities of their polling units because they are representatives of the INEC chairman,” he said.

He added that INEC guidelines must be adhered to including using the card reader machines, adding that where there were hitches, its technical officials would address such.

“All the card reader machines are working, but the ad-hoc officials may not be effective in using them hence the training. The use of the machine would prevent multiple voting,” he said.

The INEC official urged voters to be patient with the machines and cooperate with officials to enable them to conduct the forthcoming elections successfully.

Mr. Bulus Dabit, the Director of NOA in Plateau said that the Agency was worried about the number of invalid votes recorded during the last elections, saying voter education was critical to ensure votes counted.

“I want to commend voters in the last elections for being resilient and coming out en masse to exercise their franchise.

“We want to appeal to political parties and traditional leaders to educate electorates on how to vote accurately,” he said.

Narrating the challenges of the last elections, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akeem Yusuf in Plateau stated that some INEC officials were overwhelmed with some of the challenges they encountered at their various polling units.

“Some challenges were what the officials can address but some of them were afraid to take appropriate measures, they need reorientation to address this issue,” he said.

NAN reports that participants at the town hall meeting included security agencies, faith-based organisations, civil society organisations and journalists among others.

NNPC moves against fraudulent oil marketers, seizes N771m assets

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Tuesday, stated that together with the country’s anti-corruption agencies and the Department of State Security Services, DSS, it has recovered assets worth over N771 million from some fraudulent oil marketers.

In a statement in Abuja, the NNPC said the marketers had under-paid for petroleum products supplied to them from its downstream subsidiary, the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, at the Kaduna Depot.

It stated that the shady dealings of the fraudulent oil marketers were uncovered by forensic experts engaged by the NNPC Anti-Corruption Committee for the purpose.

The Chairman of the NNPC Anti-Corruption Committee, Mr. Mike Balami, disclosed that some of the assets recovered from the oil marketers include filling stations, water factories and six sports utility vehicles.

He added that the forensic investigation would be extended to the other NNPC depots across the country to stop the bleeding of the national oil company.

He said, “It was established that the affected marketers lifted petroleum products from the PPMC Kaduna depot without evidence of payment and when confronted with the evidence, they admitted to the offence and failed to pay their liabilities.

“The NNPC Group Managing Director, Mr. Maikanti Baru, was passionate about stopping all the leakages in the corporation. The forfeited assets would be handed over to NNPC Corporate Asset Boarding and Disposal Committee, CABDC, for immediate disposal.”

Balami added that investigation into lifting of petroleum products without evidence of payment was continuing, while he urged all relevant stakeholders to support the NNPC Anti-Corruption Committee in its onerous task of recovering all its monies outside NNPC’s system.

He said that this was the first time that the NNPC would be taking over assets forfeited by marketers who defaulted in their terms of engagement.

Balami disclosed that the Federal Government’s intelligence and anti-corruption agencies that collaborated with the Committee to recover the assets from the defaulting marketers included the DSS, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says that only certified vehicles by it and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be allowed to move election material during the governorship election.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Lagos State Sector Commander made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.

Omeje said that INEC had had Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Union of Road Transport Workers on the legitimate movement of the election materials to the various polling unit.

According to him, they have provided vehicles and we have certified and given stickers to them to show that they are fit for the election duty and that is what we will adhere to.

”It is those vehicles given to us that we are going to make use of and we were able to certify 1,650 vehicles plus additional vehicles from INEC itself arranged to be use for the election.

”And every vehicle to move election materials must have stickers of FRSC and INEC showing that the vehicles are legitimate on election duty anything short of that will not be allowed,” he said.

Omeje said that about 750 FRSC personnel had been deployed in the governorship election and attention would be given to those flash point areas to provide intelligence to the police.

He said that FRSC would be working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies as the corps mandate was to ensure that no movement order was adhere to.

”We are going to block all the road leading to Lagos State to ensure restrictions of movement is adhered to, though police provide the lead while we assist,” he added.

NAN reports that the NURTW, Lagos Council, had said that all the vehicles assigned to move election personnel and materials to various polling units were in good condition.

Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, the Lagos State Chairman of the union had said in an interview with NAN on Feb. 15,

Agbede said that all the union members involved in the exercise were ready and the vehicles to be used were in good condition ready for the elections.

”All our vehicles are in good condition and everybody involved in moving election materials are ready to perform their duty effectively in Lagos State,” the union chairman said.

EFCC reportedly stopped from probing plane loaded with cash on election eve

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reportedly been barred from investigating a private jet loaded with money on February 15, 2019, the eve of the aborted presidential and National Assembly elections.

On February 15th, a video of a plane unable to fly because of the huge amount of cash stuffed on it, went viral. According to Punch, multiple sources said the EFCC operatives thereafter stormed the area after a tip-off from some people about the cargo.

They demanded the source of the money, its owner and destination. The crew was said to have informed the operatives that the money was meant for election expenses in Kwara State, but the detectives reportedly insisted on taking away the cash haul.

“The EFCC operatives interrogated the crew and they claimed they were part of the government. They also gave a code which they assumed the operatives would understand, but the detectives insisted on taking away the money.

However, a phone call came from the Presidential Villa ordering them to hands off the matter and clear off from the scene. Shortly after, armed soldiers took over the scene and the money was transferred into another plane which took off by 10pm that night.”

Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson of the anti-graft agency, Tony Orilade, said he doubts if the incident really happened.

“On the plane-load of cash you asked about, I saw the pictures and we know that these pictures are things that can be manipulated to achieve the purposes by their producers. All the reports from the field are being reviewed and we shall come out with our position once it is ready.

Let’s not be carried away by the activities of mischief-makers; like the acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu said, we shall continue to do the right thing to make Nigeria a better country for everyone.”Orilade said

Meanwhile, findings have indicated that the EFCC may not investigate the movement of huge cash into two bullion vans by a leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the eve of the elections.

Although Tinubu admitted in an interview with journalists in Lagos that he transported the bulk money into his Ikoyi residence, it was gathered that the anti-graft agency had no plan to probe the incident.

Breaking: INEC adjourns Presidential Collation till Monday

ABUJA : The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has adjourned the final collation of the Presidential Election results to Monday by 11am.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced this Sunday evening while formally declaring open the National Collation Centre.

“From today, the collation centre is hereby declared open until the final determination of the 2019 presidential election. During the course of proceedings, there may be interludes or adjournments and these will be announced by the Chief Returning Officer.

“At the moment no State Collation Officer has is around. Some of them are expected tonight. Accordingly, proceedings are hereby adjourned. We will reconvene by 11am tomorrow Monday 25th February for the collation of results”, he declared.

INEC had earlier said in Ekiti, the process had since been concluded and the State Collation Officer was being expected in Abuja but as at 7pm, he was yet to arrive. Some of the officers would come by road while others would come by air depending on their proximity to Abuja.

“Meanwhile, collation of results from yesterday’s elections continue nationwide. Almost all the states have concluded RA Collation and are now collating results at the LGA level. Some have commenced state level collation. We expect the state collation officers for the Presidential elections to start arriving at the National Collation Centre later today and early morning tomorrow. Accordingly, the National Collation Centre will be officially declared open today at 6pm. Collation will commence as soon as the results arrive from the states. On this note, I wish to state that Ekiti state has already concluded the process. The state collation officer for the Presidential election is, as we speak, on his way to Abuja with the result of the Presidential election for Ekiti”, Yakubu had said.

According to him, the collation officer has also made returns in the National Assembly elections in Ekiti state.

He said though the commission was generally satisfied with the way Nigerians conducted themselves during the exercise, it was disheartening to note the killing of one of its ad hoc staff in Rivers by political thugs.

“While in all these attacks, electoral staff sustained injuries, we have unfortunately recorded the first fatality in Rivers state. An ad hoc staff, Mrs Ibiseki Amachree was hit by a bullet while returning from election duty in Degema. May her soup rest in peace. We condemn this attack and have lodged a comprehensive report with security agencies for expeditious investigation and prosecution of those involved”, he said.

This was as the INEC boss said the commission has also handed over one of its Electoral Officers in Imo to the Police for election duty infractions.

” All election duty personnel have sworn to an oath of neutrality. We have reports of possible dereliction of duty by some electoral officials. They refused to activate or deploy the smart card readers. The failure to fully account for materials for the elections, absconding from duty and a host of other infractions. In Imo state, one of our Electoral Officers had already been handed over to the Police. We will not tolerate violations against, or by our own officials”, he warned.

Buhari leads in Alagomeji, Lagos

He spoke of how INEC staff and policemen were held hostage in a place in Rivers, saying he had to immediately initiate their rescue process by calling on the heads of security agencies.
